CITY PRESS has a vacancy for a COPY SUB-EDITOR based in Randburg, Johannesburg.
City Press is a respected news brand that publishes across platforms. Its flagship print edition is distributed nationally on a Sunday, but it also has a popular online platform, newsletters, and social media platforms that are growing quickly and are followed closely by influencers and readers.
Main purpose of the role:
To ensure that the final copy that is delivered to both print and online platforms is error free.
Key responsibilities:
- Edit and proof-read print and web copy, demonstrating sufficient knowledge to cut copy in such a way that it makes sense;
- Regular engagement in copy processing in the CMS and good understanding of the CMS.
- Check for accuracy of facts and correct spelling and grammar;
- Write captions, headlines and blurbs that are enticing as well as linguistically and factually correct;
- Read page proofs with care and make corrections;
- Translate copy, ensuring that it is linguistically and factually correct;
- Ensure that copy follows City Press’s specific style regarding grammar, language and spelling preferences; and
- Remain informed of and implement the latest language rules as contained in the language style guide.

The ideal candidate has to comply with the following requirements:
- At least five years of experience as a copy sub with mainstream papers
- Proven excellent written English language skills
- A relevant tertiary qualification
- Able to work fast and accurately, and adhere strictly to deadlines
- Willing to work irregular hours
- Willing to work on Saturdays
